The Cary Leeds Center for Tennis & Learning is the flagship home of NYJTL, a community organization teaching tennis from juniors to the highest level. Located in the Bronx, the project provides all of the central resources of the club, from courts and practice facilities through the central social and administrative functions.

Utilizing very simple lighting techniques, the space feels active and engaged throughout day and night, transitioning from a practical sports facility to an elegant event and reception center when needed.

Deep shade within the building provides a respite from the courts, but remains visually engaged at all times, the glass is designed with lighting that does not reflect excessively allowing lots of visual engagement outwards.

Indirect lighting, wallwashing and other basic techniques provide a simple, but rich visual environment.

Creating community need not always have a lot of focus on lighting – sometimes simple is best.
