DonorsChoose.org is a charity driven by human value and the use of technology to efficiently serve those in need. Implicit in those values is care for the wellbeing of both staff and volunteers. Over three phases, Lux Populi has supported DonorsChoose.org in the creation and expansion of its New York City offices.

Pro Bono projects need light delivered cost effectively, but this need not take away from the quality of the lit environment. Simple technology was used to deliver light in a series of innovative and fun ways, within a “schoolhouse” motif.

Efficient work areas are lit through simple indirect lighting, whereas front of house social spaces are lit from decorative lighting deployed with consideration for comfort and the illumination of faces.

For as engaging as the design is, it was also important that it communicated the value of thrift in operational expenses. If the criteria of efficient charity is the minimization of operational expenses, the light must embody this also.

Staff retention has dramatically improved with each successive expansion as the key needs of the staff have been addressed. These include practical workspaces, private retreat spaces, collaboration, communication and public engagement areas.

Delivered at extremely low budget, the DonorsChoose.org offices have been recognized as one of the best office work environments in the world.

Excellence and a quality working environment are not dependent upon budget, but rather, upon thinking.
