From above, the Cascade House appears to be a simple, conventional modernist house – a bar bridging across two grounding elements. As one explores the house, the full five storey program unfurls itself into the magnificently interconnected structure that it is. With many elegant moments, the lighting has a common tonality throughout the home, but the complex program, including indoor basketball court and pool, bedrooms, play rooms, gallery and studio each have tailored solutions. Of particular pride is the north stair, a glass box stands against the view to Lake Michigan and glows gently. Lighting concealed within the air conditioning supply provides soft lighting throughout the volume, captured on frits, joints and planes, while light wells up from below, inviting the denizens into the private spaces below.
