Port Miami Cranes

Architect
Location
Miami

Commissioned by PortMiami to explore the possibilities of lighting the cranes as visual features on the skyline of Miami, Lux Populi collaborated with CBI to write a feasibility study and budget for the implementation of a concept by Tom Langley at Turkel.  The cranes tower over much of Biscayne Bay and sit on the horizon of all the properties lining the bay, including downtown Miami, Brickell Key, the causeways and South Beach.  Currently they are industrial eyesores – practical by day, lit with glary exposed sources by night.

The vision of the design team is to utilize these as elements that communicate all that is Miami, both to those present and in media and creative coverage of the City – a key element of identity on the skyline like the Eiffel Tower to Paris or the Sydney Harbour Bridge to Australia.  The study explored the modification of lighting and paint schemes to achieve an effect of giant flamingos sitting over Miami.

The study explored available technologies, visual impacts, design variations, breadth of functionality, initial and lifecycle costs, etc, and reported back the viability and budget of such a scheme.  The project remains ready for implementation, pending available budgets.
